center;\">the French took charge and cast out the Nazis<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">from the City of Lights, when the Occupying Germans feared<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">the approach of the Allies and tried to force a 9pm curfew<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">on the citizens of Paris.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Occupation, if it is benign, is one thing, but a curfew is an outrage.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">The police took over a building opposite the Cathedral of Notre Dame<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">and then the women and children came out and started hurling their rocks<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">and the men shot tanks with small guns, and de Gaulle begged Eisenhower<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">to bring in the Allies, which he had formerly refused to do.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Impressed with the suddenly aggressive valor of the French,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">the General agreed to follow a band of French troops into Paris,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">and when they arrived, a Victory Parade was already underway<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">as the Liberation of Paris had officially happened the day before.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">A distant humming reached the ears of the Americans,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">a strange sound rising to a low murmur as they came nearer,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">then erupting into an overwhelming roar of jubilation.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">The people of Paris rushed on foot to greet them, women kissed them,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">some offered wine to the soldiers, they climbed up onto the tanks,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">hailing the Liberation of the City of Lights in the summer of 1944.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">On the same day, August 26, twenty-four years before,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">the Womens Suffrage Amendment was written into the Constitution<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">of the United States, a victory for humanity created by the relentless<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">courage, effort and suffering of American women for generations.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">By virtue of those heroic Suffragists, on June 4, 1919,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">the Nineteenth Amendment had been passed by both<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">the House and Senate of Congress,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">but it needed to be ratified by state legislatures.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Over a year later, on August 18<sup>th<\/sup> the deciding state<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">was Tennessee, the 36<sup>th<\/sup> state to cast its vote in favor,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">and the deciding vote was cast by Harry Burn,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">at twenty-four the youngest state legislator.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">That morning he&#8217;d opened his mail and read a letter<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">from his mother, in which she said she&#8217;d been watching<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">to see him declare his inclination toward Suffrage for Women,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">but so far she saw nothing. She ended her message,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8216;Don&#8217;t forget to be a good boy . . . and vote for suffrage.&#8217;\u009d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Supporters of suffrage wore yellow roses and filled the balcony<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">while opponents wore red roses on the main floor.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Harry Burn walked in wearing red, but when he voted,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">he said &#8220;Aye.&#8221;\u009d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">All the women in the balcony threw down<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">their flowers, and on that day,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">there was a beautiful storm of yellow roses<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">raining all over the representatives<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">of the state of Tennessee.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Alla&#8217;s one words ,&#8221; I&#8217;m one of the Philadelphia Eleven who became the first women priests in the Episcopal Church in 1974.
