You\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re in an unfamiliar city. You see an Episcopal Church.\u00c2\u00a0Going to Church on Sundays usually gives you \u00e2\u20ac\u0153something to hold on to\u00e2\u20ac\u009d &#8211; strength for the coming\u00c2\u00a0week and you could really use some of that strength and sense of community today &#8211; so you go in.<\/p>\n<p>After worship, you head off to coffee hour for much needed fellowship. But almost everyone you approach starts conversations with the person \u00e2\u20ac\u0153next to them or walked in another direction.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Just before you leave, you have a very brief encounter with one person who tells you that people at the parish \u00e2\u20ac\u0153normally don&#8217;t talk to folks \u00e2\u20ac\u02dctil their sixth or seventh visit.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>You leave &#8230; overwhelmed.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 And, you won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t return.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t fiction. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s true &#8211; and what Helene de Boissiere Swanson shared on the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Episcopalians On Facebook\u00e2\u20ac\u009d group. Her words jumped out at me. While I was dismayed that she had experienced such a lack of hospitality, I was not surprised. Facilitating <em>Seeing With New Eyes <\/em>workshops for dioceses and parishes over the years, such stories don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t surprise me. At all.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve stopped being surprised by clergy who explain that the reason they won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have a <em>Seeing With New Eyes<\/em> workshop in their parish is because they think it would send a signal to colleagues and bishop that the parish is not really a welcoming parish and as their bishop boasts to colleagues \u00e2\u20ac\u0153all of the parishes here are very welcoming,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that would put an unwelcome episcopal spotlight on them and the parish they serve.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve stopped being surprised by parishes who claim the ministry of hospitality as part of their Mission Statement and believe they are a welcoming parish, but whose visitors and newcomers discover them to be anything-but, as Helene\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s experience illustrated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px; text-align: left;\">If your parish truly is a welcoming parish, \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 then \u00e2\u20ac\u0153bravo.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0If you have not had an experience similar to Helene\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, ever, \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0then \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcthanks be to God.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n<p>However, both professional and personal experience tells me that in many of our parishes, the reality is otherwise as these three vignettes of worshipping is an unfamiliar church while on holiday attest:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">\u00c2\u00a0* \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Anticipating someone would welcome us to worship, we were surprised to see no one by the front door. Eventually, we found two people standing by the entrance to the Sanctuary, chatting, laughing and clearly engaged with one another. When asked for an Order of Service, one continued talking as she extended her arm with a leaflet towards us. No welcome. No smile. No anything.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">\u00c2\u00a0* \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The large, heavy wooden doors around the church were closed with no sign indicating \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcentrance.\u00e2\u20ac\u02dc Noticing people entering one door, we followed and found ourselves in the kitchen where busyness was the order of the day. People were too busy to notice or welcome strangers in their midst, let alone direct us to the Sanctuary.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">* \u00e2\u20ac\u0153No one greeted us on another Sunday as we entered the Church. The large posters on the Narthex wall (\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We need your help &#8230; sign up to clean the church, make goodies for coffee hour, greet, read, serve on a Committee etc. Sign your name here\u00e2\u20ac\u009d) told us that this was a parish whose focus was work &#8211; not worship and fellowship. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s likely not what they intended but that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the impression it leaves when it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the first thing we saw. And then, we noticed a lectern facing the Narthex wall, a Lost and Found bucket, two cans of paint beside the bucket, and a tablecloth loosely covering the Narthex table (under which was unconcealed storage) where the closed Guest Book rested. These, too, spoke volumes, and our initial reactions that this was an uncaring and unwelcoming church were confirmed by our negative experience at coffee time.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0Perhaps you think, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Our parish isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like that!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d &#8230; or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We are a welcoming parish\u00e2\u20ac\u009d &#8230; or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We have a strong ministry of hospitality\u00e2\u20ac\u009d &#8230; or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve never experienced lack of hospitality here.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>But, what if it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is<\/span> or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">may be <\/span>like that? What if people <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">have<\/span> experienced such inhospitality?\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps it is time to step back and look at the parish with new eyes &#8211; give intentional consideration to the ministry of hospitality in simple, practical ways so that the parish can be seen and experienced as a welcoming spiritual home for parishioner and stranger alike.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not easy to do. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s difficult to be objective for often, our eyes are dim when we look around at our familiar church &#8230; its property &#8230; buildings &#8230; outdoor signs &#8230; printed material &#8230; internet presence &#8230; Greeters ministry &#8230; coffee time &#8230; outgoing phone message, etc. One such parish was shocked to discover the name and contact information for the rector of the parish (who had retired over a year and a half before!) had never been updated.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, the stories I could tell that would begin &#8230; \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Picture this!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>What about your parish?\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Is it time to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsee with new eyes\u00e2\u20ac\u2122?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_539\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katrinasdream.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/June-CU.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-539\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-539\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katrinasdream.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/June-CU-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"The Rev.
