The Promise is Given

Hanukkah has

come once again

And the Children of

Israel

know it as sorrow

An ancient people, we

remember

The many times of

darkness

And the candles as

we wait

For a better day, a

better dawn

Long ago, we were a

people under siege

Forbidden our religion

And yet we believed

in the promise of

tomorrow

We believed GD

would not casually

forget us

He didn’t in that dark

temple of yesteryear

When we lit the

first of candles

Today, as then, we

were surrounded by

People who wouldn’t

let us be

We withstood our test

then

And we will do so

again

It is what we hold to —

our GD and tomorrow

For we know even in

the dark

Life can be sweet

Our GD, unseen, is with us

We are not forgotten

We have been

separated from the

land

And cast adrift and

yet we believe

And know we

continue

through darkness

Into the light of better days

We will not forget the GD

that gives us fire

He knows our tears,

our fears and our

joys

To live is the greatest

gift we were given

When others did deny

us happiness

We still ate and

danced and sang

Because we knew our GD was with us

Saying hold on

through this night

We are not forgotten

We will keep the faith

and wait

We will dance and

laugh and sing

Remember the many

travails we survived

And the joy when the day was won

Do not fear for we are

not forgotten

We will light the

candles

And we will wait, ever

faithful

Knowing we have

survived worst days

Life is very sweet

Our GD, unseen, is

with us and we are

with Him
