Active in prison reform, Katrina’s Dream has held monthly candlelight vigils e “Close the Death Chamber” at San Quentin Prison since February 7, 2011, to advocate for abolishing the death penalty. In January 2011, the group highlighted Governor Jerry Brown’s approval of a $356 million budget extension for prison remodeling and U.S. District Judge Jeremy Fogel’s inspection of a $900,000 remodel from the previous year, drawing significant local media attention.

Following William Swanson’s untimely death in 2013, Katrina’s Dream, which he co-founded, is re-envisioning its prison reform initiatives, including the “Close the Death Chamber” vigils, to continue addressing injustices faced by the incarcerated. William’s philosophy of justice and compassion remains central to the organization’s mission. A notable vigil on February 3, 2014, at 4:30 p.m. outside San Quentin’s West Gate called on Governor Brown and California legislators to abolish the death penalty, uniting people of all faiths in this cause.

Katrina’s Dream continues to rally support, urging Californians to oppose the death penalty and participate in shared events and prayers.
