Come One, Come All! Equal Rights Amendment: A Panel Presentation

Dear Friends and Family,

I am most delighted to announce that this coming October 5, 2021, at 5:00 pm PT The Queen’s Bench Bar Association and Marin County Women Lawyers present The Equal Rights Amendment: A Panel Presentation. I invite you to join the event, G-d willing, as well as, take a moment to share the program with everyone everywhere. The program is a zoom 1.25-hour credit for Elimination of Bias MCLE credit for California lawyers ($35 for fee) free to non-attorneys/public and members of the Queen’s Bench and Marin County Women Lawyers.

Program Overview

The panellists will provide a historical perspective and personal account of the history of the ERA and will discuss the importance of advocacy in advancing it. The panellists will also discuss why the ERA remains critically needed and role that women of color have played in advocacy around the ERA, will explore the current status of the resolution to rescind the deadline to ratify the ERA, being officially recognized as the Twenty-Eight Amendment in the current legal landscape, and will talk about the future of the ERA and the potential impacts of enactment.

Panelists

Honorable Judge Barbara O’Hearn, is a long-time member of Queen’s Bench who served as a Congressional intern during the peak of the Equal Rights Amendment ratifying process.An administrative law judge for California’s Office of Administrative Hearings, She has spent her career in the public interest and government law and has been a tireless advocate of the advancement of women in the legal profession. In addition to her service on the Queen’s Bench, she is also a past president of Women Lawyers of Sacramento and a past board member and officer of California Women Lawyers.

Senator Patricia Spearman is an American cleric, a United States Army veteran having served for 29 years, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel, and a Nevada State Senator, and Democratic politician. She was elected in November 2012 to the Nevada Senate representing District 1, that is composed of the northern section of North Las Vegas and slivers of neighboring jurisdictions, after winning the general election. Spearman became the first openly lesbian member of the Nevada Legislature was re-elected in November 2016 [sic] and serves as co-majority whip since. (Note: ,,, and 2020...)Highly regarded as one of the most liberal members of the Nevada Senate, Spearman has introduced bills that provide equal pay for women, support LGBT rights, and support veterans. Spearman successfully navigated the 2017 Nevada General Assembly to ratify the Equal Rights is Equal Rights Amendment becoming the first state to ratify in the 21st Century.

Helene de Boissiere – Swanson co-founded Katrina’s Dream in memory of her late mother-in-law the Rev. Katrina Martha Van Alstyne Welles – Swanson, one of the Philadelphia Eleven, along with her late husband William Gaines Swanson and father-in-law the late Rev. George Gaines Swanson and the late Rev. Robert T. Coolidge in the days following her mother-in-law’s death. Â She dreams of a world where believers and non-believers alike dialogue through ‘Love Co-existence’ and come together utilizing the African way of Ubuntu to address issues as they arise that affect humanity and the planet.  She is writing a book on her advocacy efforts to promote the ERA which includes her 7,000+ mile pilgrimage where she met with legislators and advocates across the country, which is noted in the Nevada legislative record as being the inspiration for the state to ratify. (Yes, that’s correct, and I’m o’er the top and honored.)

Linda Coberly is the Managing Partner of Winston & Strawn LLP, Chicago office and serves on the firm’s Executive Committee. She is a partner in the firm’s Litigation Department and chairs its Appellate and Critical Motions Practice. She also serves as chair of the national ERA Coalition’s Legal Task Force, made up of leading constitutional scholars working toward ratification and recognition of the Equal Rights Amendment. Linda is one of the nation’s topER appellate lawyers, as recognized by Chambers USA, The Legal 500, and U.S. News – Best Lawyers. She is an active member of the Appellate Advocacy and Amicus Committees of DRI (the Defense Research Institute), and the National Association of Women Lawyers.

In closing, The Equal Rights Amendment: A Panel Presentation program promises to be most informative, and I am over the top, and I am so looking forward to having you attend this simply amazing educational opportunity to be up to date on the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment into the US Constitution.
